When I first setup our debian git-daemon I noticed this dependency for git-daemon-run called runit, and runit is evil and full of hate, so I created a way to use existing /etc/init.d/ system to run the daemon, just change the settings to match your system and put the files in place.
First remove git-daemon-run if you have it installed
apt-get remove git-daemon-run
Then create the files below, then do this:
chmod +x /etc/init.d/git-daemon
/etc/init.d/git-daemon start
and your good to go. Contents of files follow.
/etc/init.d/git-daemon

#! /bin/sh
